Cloud and Precipitation Observations With the NPOESS Aircraft Sounder Testbed - Microwave (NAST-M) Spectrometer Suite at 54/118/183/425 GHz

چکیده
The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Aircraft Sounder Testbed Microwave, or NAST-M, has added two spectrometers to its original suite operating near the oxygen lines at 50-57 GHz and the oxygen line at 118.75 GHz. These new spectrometers are centered on the water vapor absorption line at 183.31 GHz and the oxygen absorption line at 424.76 GHz. This addition has increased the ability of NAST-M to retrieve humidity profiles and to sense smaller-diameter hydrometeors. The co-aligned NAST-M suite concurrently imaged clouds and convective cells during the Cirrus Regional Study of Tropical Anvils and Cirrus Layers-Florida Area Cirrus Experiment (CRYSTAL-FACE 2002) and the 2003 Pacific THORpex (THe Observing-system Research and predictability experiment) Observing System Test (THORpex 2003).

The National Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) aircraft sounder testbed (NAST) has recently been developed and deployed on the NASA ER-2 high-altitude aircraft. The testbed consists of two co-located cross-track scanning instruments: a Fourier transform interferometer spectrometer (NAST-I) [1] with spectral coverage of 3.7–15.5 m and a passive microwave spectrom...

The National Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Airborne Sounder Testbed (NAST) consists of two passive collocated cross-track scanning instruments, an infrared interferometer (NAST-I) and a microwave radiometer (NAST-M), that fly onboard high-altitude aircraft such as the NASA ER-2 at an altitude near 20 km. NAST-I provides relatively high spectral resolution (0...

A physical inversion scheme has been developed dealing with cloudy as well as cloud-free radiance observed with ultraspectral infrared sounders to simultaneously retrieve surface, atmospheric thermodynamic, and cloud microphysical parameters. A fast radiative transfer model, which applies to the clouded atmosphere, is used for atmospheric profile and cloud parameter retrieval. A one-dimensional...
متن کاملThermodynamic and cloud parameter retrieval using infrared spectral data
[1] High-resolution infrared radiance spectra obtained from near nadir observations provide atmospheric, surface, and cloud property information. A fast radiative transfer model, including cloud effects, is used for atmospheric profile and cloud parameter retrieval. The retrieval algorithm is presented along with its application to recent field experiment data from the NPOESS Airborne Sounder T...

Satellite ultraspectral infrared sensors provide key data records essential for weather forecasting and climate change science. The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Soumi NPP) satellite Environmental Data Records (EDRs) are retrieved from calibrated ultraspectral radiance or Sensor Data Records (SDRs). Understanding the accuracy of retrieved EDRs is critical. The second Suomi NPP Cali...
